1. Sowing the Seeds:

• Seed Selection: Start by choosing high-quality seeds from reputable sources. Select seeds that are fresh and suitable for your climate and region. I recommend True Leaf Market.
• Seed Depth: Different vegetables have varying germination requirements. As a general rule, plant seeds at a depth that is approximately 2-3 times their diameter. Read the seed package for recommended planting depth.
• Planting Medium: Use a well-draining seed starting mix to provide optimal conditions for germination. Fill seed trays or pots with the mix, use your finger or the end of a pen to create a hole for the seed, insert seed and cover. There is no need to pack the soil. Slowly and lightly water the soil, try not to pour the water fast enough to cause the dirt to displace.

2. Success Rate Expectations:

• Germination rates vary based on the vegetable type. Some seeds, like lettuce and radishes, can sprout within a few days, while others, such as peppers and tomatoes, might take a couple of weeks.
• On average, aim for a germination rate of 70-90%. Not all seeds will sprout, and some might need a little extra time.

3. Ideal Temperature and Humidity:

• Temperature: Most vegetable seeds germinate best at temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Using a seed heating mat can help maintain a consistent temperature.
• Humidity: Keep the humidity levels high, around 70-80%, to create a moist environment for seed germination. Covering the trays with clear plastic or using a humidity dome can help retain moisture.

4. Water and Nutrient Requirements:

• Watering: Use a gentle misting or a bottom-watering approach to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to fungal issues.
• Fertilization: At the germination stage, seeds usually have enough nutrients within their seed coat. Wait until the first true leaves appear before applying a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.

5. Light Requirements:

• Light Type: Provide ample light to ensure healthy seedling growth. If natural sunlight is limited, consider using fluorescent or LED grow lights.
• Light Duration: Aim for 14-16 hours of light per day to encourage robust growth.

6. Timeline Expectations Based on Cultivar:

• Quick Sprouters (3-7 days): Lettuce, radishes, spinach, arugula.
• Intermediate (7-14 days): Beans, peas, carrots, chard, beets.
• Slow Germinators (10-21 days): Peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, squash.

Sometimes, plants face threats from pests, diseases, and fungal infections like Powdery Mildew, Rust or Blight that can hinder their growth. In such cases, spraying your plants with fungicides, pesticides, or beneficial nutrients can provide the necessary protection and nourishment. However, it’s essential to approach this task with caution and precision. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of effectively spraying your plants, including the ideal time of day and the precautions you should take by reading the label on the bottle of the product you’re using.

Why Spray Your Plants?

Spraying your plants with fungicides, pesticides, or beneficial nutrients serves various purposes:

1. Disease and Pest Control: Fungicides and pesticides protect plants from harmful fungi, insects, and other pests that can cause damage or even death.
2. Nutrient Enhancement: Beneficial nutrients can provide essential elements that promote plant growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Choosing the Right Product: Reading the Label

Before starting, it’s crucial to select the appropriate product for your plants’ needs. Different plants, pests, and diseases require specific treatments. Always read the label on the product bottle to understand:

1. Target Pests/Diseases: Ensure the product you’re using is designed to combat the particular pests or diseases affecting your plants.
2. Application Rate: The label will provide information on how much product to mix per gallon of water. Using the correct concentration is crucial to avoid harming your plants.
3. Safety Precautions: Labels include safety instructions, such as protective gear recommendations and any hazards associated with the product.
4. Application Frequency: Follow the recommended application schedule. Overusing products can lead to plant damage or chemical buildup in the soil.

Ideal Time of Day for Spraying

The timing of your spray applications plays a significant role in their effectiveness:

1. Early Morning or Late Afternoon: These are the best times to spray. Avoid applying during the hottest part of the day, as the heat can cause the products to evaporate too quickly and the sun can burn your plants due to the water droplets acting as tiny magnifying glasses.
2. Calmer Weather: Choose a day with minimal wind to prevent drift of the product onto unintended areas.

Precautions and Application Steps

Follow these precautions and steps for a successful spraying session:

1. Wear Protective Gear: Always wear the protective gear recommended on the product label. This may include gloves, goggles, and a mask.
2. Prepare the Mixture: Mix the product according to the label instructions. Using too much or too little can harm your plants or render the treatment ineffective. Always use filtered water if possible (reverse osmosis is best.)
3. Test on a Small Area: Before applying to your entire plant, test the solution on a small section to ensure it doesn’t cause adverse effects.
4. Apply Evenly: Use a sprayer to evenly distribute the solution. Cover both sides of leaves and stems, as well as the soil around the base of the plant.
5. Avoid Runoff: Prevent excessive runoff to minimize environmental impact and ensure the product reaches the intended target.
6. Proper Disposal: Dispose of any leftover solution, empty containers, and protective gear according to local regulations.
7. Wash Hands and Clothing: After spraying, wash your hands and any clothing that may have come into contact with the solution.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively protect and nourish your plants while minimizing risks to both your plants and the environment. Remember that each product may have specific instructions, so always prioritize reading the label for accurate information. With careful attention and proper application, you’ll be well on your way to maintaining thriving, pest-free plants.

My Recommendations:

For Powdery Mildew I recommend using a sulfur based spray like Safer Fungicide or Bonide Sulfur Dust. The easier option is to buy the Safer Fungicide spray that comes in a spray bottle, the cheaper option is to buy the Sulfur Dust and mix it with water yourself and use your own sprayer. I use the Bonide Sulfur Dust at 50% strength (I rarely use any sprays at 100% strength as it is not necessary) mixed with filtered water and spray with my FogMaster Jr Electric Sprayer.

For Tomato Blight I recommend using a copper based spray like Bonide Copper Fungicide. Same as above, easier option is to buy the ready-to-go spray bottle, cheaper option is to mix it yourself and buy the product in bulk.

Imagine these fungi as plant vampires – they attach themselves to leaves, stems, and other plant parts. They spread around with the help of wind or sneaky insects. When the wind blows, it carries their tiny spores from one plant to another, kind of like how dandelion seeds float in the air. Pests like insects can also carry these spores on their bodies as they move from plant to plant. Fungal gnats,

There are different types of powdery mildew fungi, and they each have their own favorites. For example, the powdery mildew that bothers squash plants might also bother some other plants in the same plant family, but it won’t bother roses. And the powdery mildew that bothers roses won’t bother zinnias (and the other way around). However, the powdery mildew that affects zinnias can also affect many other plants that belong to the same plant group.

These powdery mildew fungi are like picky eaters – they only like to live on living plants. Once the part of the plant they’ve attached to dies, the mildew dies too, unless they make special structures called chasmothecia (spherical, resting stages of the fungus). These structures are like cozy resting places for the fungus. So, the fungi need living plants to survive and thrive.

How to Prevent Powdery Mildew infestation:

Let’s start off with the six P’s: Preparation and preventative measures prevent piss poor performance. Prevention is the best weapon against pests, mold and mildew. Adequate spacing between your plants to ensure proper airflow, not watering the leaves of the plants, and avoiding splashing water from the soil onto the leaves while watering are all great ways to help prevent powdery mildew. It unfortunately lives in the air on weeds, bushes and shrubs so it is likely just a matter of time before your plants are infected.

Once your plants have grown to their teenage state, maybe they have some flower buds forming, or your first fruits or veggies are showing, is a great time to start preemptively spraying with a sulfur or copper based fungicide. Continue to spray weekly until the plants come to their old age and are ready to join the compost bin. One benefit of keeping the plants healthy throughout their life is being able to avoid introducing any mold or mildew to your compost.

How to Manage the Powdery Mildew infestation:

There are two types of fungicidal control:

• The first being eradication of existing infections
• And the second being protection of healthy tissues.

The first step is simple, remove any leaves that have been infected. This will slow down the spread of the fungi by removing the spores ability to spread by wind or insect. Here is an unfortunate truth and why you should remove the infected leaves: once the Powdery Mildew has infected a leaf or other plant tissue, it now lives inside of that area of the plant. The fungus survives as mycelium in those areas. So it’s best to remove those areas. Even if you spray those areas and it seems to disappear, it will come back with a vengeance.

The second step is to spray the plant with your fungicide of choice. It is advised to rotate the different fungicides to help slow down the development of fungicide resistance. There are a lot of organic fungicides available on the market today. I have had good results with Safer Fungicide that contains 12% Sulfur in a liquid form. I mix this with water based on the recommended amount and spray the plants once a week at first sign of Powdery Mildew (be sure to remove the infected leaves before you spray otherwise you will spread the fungi spores!) Another great product is Bonide Sulfur Plant Fungicide that contains 90% sulfur in the form of a dust. It can be added to a fine mist sprayer like a FogMaster Jr and applied via micronized spray or applied as a dust. I use it as a spray. Mixing the sulfur with purified water seems to do the best job.
